LaSalle Language Academy Community Newsletter - Week 21

Academic Progress Updates: Having given the NWEA test a couple of weeks ago, along with ending the quarter on Tuesday, we are now hyper focused on strong, strategic instruction between now and the end of the year. We are currently using data to identify in what areas we need to adjust instruction to help all students meet their growth goals in both reading and math, and providing support from our two new interventionists at all grade levels to target specific skills. We are monitoring the progress of this plan daily and weekly in different ways to make adjustments based on various data (tests, quizzes, activities, projects, observations, etc). We also need your help!! Please reinforce the teaching at school, keep an eye on homework sent home, check Parent Portal consistently, and if you see your child struggling in any area, please reach out to the teacher if you have any questions. Thank you for all that you do to make LaSalle a great place for learning...and please thank your child’s teacher when you see them! Everyone appreciates kindness and caring.
Attendance THANK YOU!
This week’s attendance has been AMAZING, and has pushed us past where we were this time last year. Ending last year at 95.3% attendance, we have work to do to get to 96% overall, so...let’s keep up the good work! We want your children here so we can teach them and help them work towards meeting their goals in a safe and welcoming environment. Based on feedback, in the future the personalized emails like the one I sent last weekend will have messages that are more specific to your child’s attendance (high versus low).

Black History Month is Off to a Great Start!!
Have you seen our bulletin boards? All are decorated for famous African American role models. Pictures will be shared soon. We've been doing daily trivia competitions, which will culminate in a big event. Friday was our first in-person event, where @UrbanGateways performed their Evolution of African American Music performance. Quoting a fourth grader: "It was spectacular!" Besides the pictures below, you can see full videos here!!

Parking Enforcement Notice!!
We are expecting the city to increase its supervision of traffic and parking near our school during arrival and dismissal times over the coming weeks, and to issue tickets to those who are breaking laws. Note: double parking and blocking driveways/alleys are illegal, even if "just for a bit", and the city fine may be $100.  I hope my messages on this topic over the past three weeks have reminded everyone of the need to be safe and to follow traffic laws. Please take advantage of the "Kiss n' Go" drop-off on Orleans, and if you don't see a legal street parking spot you can try the St. Michael's church lot as another choice.
NEW Physical Education Site...Launches Monday!
Mr. Van and Coach H are set to roll out a LaSalle PE web page where you can find pictures and videos of your student in action, to be found on the LaSalle website. The page will also include descriptions of lessons and games. There will also be a link to the Amazon Wish List, which you should be able to search for on Amazon at "LaSalle PE Wish List".
Want Better Food at LaSalle??
Aramark, our nutrition provider, wants your feedback. The Emoji Food Survey is a fun and interactive way for students to share their thoughts about school breakfast and lunch! Students can answer all of the questions by choosing the emoji or picture that matches how they feel! I did it myself...quite interesting! Any CPS student can take the survey in any computer, tablet or cell phone. When they are done, they can enter the raffle for a chance to win great prizes! All results are specifically for LaSalle's feedback.
Please Help Us and Spread this Survey so we can meet the needs of your students nutritionally and to assist in the overall objective to educate the whole child. Share on School Website, school Facebook/ Twitter, and School publications and newsletters to make sure our students are heard!
