LaSalle 21st Annual Posada
La Posada is the name of the ritual reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s search for lodging in Bethlem, that occurs for nine days before Christmas in Mexico and other Latin American countries. A procession of neighborhood children and adults play the roles of Maria, José, angels, shepherds and pilgrims (peregrinos). They look for lodging by going house to house and singing Christmas songs and the traditional ten verse call-and-response song, Pidiendo Posada (Begging for Shelter).
LaSalle Language Academy has organized this community event for now 21 years. It celebrates our Hispanic families' traditions.
On December 10th, a mariachis' band joined the crowd as participants practiced the traditional songs in the gym, then looked for shelter at four nearby houses. Following the procession around the school and in the neighborhood, the band played for the parents, students and staff in the café and in the hallways beautifully decked with papel picad, carefully crafted by students..Then LaSalle families were treated to tamales and hot champurrado (a thick hot chocolate drink). Our younger students enjoyed whacking at a traditional star-shaped piñata!
When families left, they were offered conchas”, sweet rolls with bright colored festic as "aginaldos" (favors). We thank all the students, teachers, and the multi-cultural PTA Committee who worked hard to prepare this wonderful and authentic Hispanic event.
