Global Festivities at LaSalle
December 20 was a busy day at LaSalle. We hosted the principals of a number of local schools in the new Fullerton network. In addition to visiting classes throughout the school, they were also able to observe some of the cultural enrichment activities from which the students at LaSalle benefit.
In the morning, we were treated to an early visit by La Befana the elderly Italian lady who visits children and brings them candy at Epiphany. Accompanied by the bagpipe-playing Zampognaro, she wandered the halls and and listened primary grade Italian students perform traditional songs and poems before distributing her goodies.
In the evening, we held the 22nd annual Posada. Rallied by the threat of LaSalle losing its magnet status, we had a record number of families turn out for this traditional Mexican celebration. Prior to the festivities, principal Heurtefeu, LSC and PTA members addressed the crowd of parents and Univision interviewed community representatives. Having just been informed by Jean-Claude Brizard that the school would maintain its magnet status, an atmosphere of cautious optimism prevailed. The candlelit procession with students angels and shepherds, sang the traditional Posada songs at houses in the neighborhood. A lively mariachi band accompanied the singers. Eventually, the procession, followed by a large crowd of parents and students, returned to the school for a feast of tamales, rice, champurrado, sweet treats, and a stunning star-shaped piƱata.
Thank you to all the teachers and parent volunteers who worked so hard to bring these wonderful cultural enrichment activities to our diverse students and families. This is what we are all about at LaSalle!
